I should do a review. The Olympus EP5

Seriously?
Yeah why not? So many people in the world are writing reviews. I am going to start writing on the gears in which I have been enjoying using. First up will be the Olympus Ep5.

Huhh?
Yup, that camera. That camera which was released so many moons ago that I don't bother to count. What I do want to count is the amount of $ one can save by buying it used now. I got mine for SGD$250. I think that that is a steal.

How do I go about it?
How about a picture?

Wondering, EP5 with Panasonic 25mm 1.4

There are more from this gem of a find but you have to wait for a bit.

Back to the camera
For those who, like me have grown and marvelled at the amazing design of the Olympus Digital Pens, the EP5 must have been one of the more handsome of the lot, apart from the EP3, which I had and which I sold. This camera has a 16MP lens, and higher tolerance for higher iso. It also has in built stabilisation. And most importantly, it works. Whenever, it became the flavour of the month, camera wise, I just stuff it in my bag and use it more like a point and shoot. Or a smart phone.

However, it is heavy. You may like it for its looks but it is heavy. Without a grip that is as pronounce as the sony e mount nex 6 for example, it does tend to slip out of your fingers. That can be distracting. I believe, as like many other people, that a camera should be an extension of one's arm, eyes and all that which means, taking a picture should be as pure as one can get as a reflex action. Constantly thinking and making sure the camera does not fall out of your fingers, somehow interfere with the actual phototaking process abit, in my opinion anyways.

WIFI
The wifi connection is comparable to the one found in the fuji xe2, no password required. I just pair my iphone to it. A bit cumbersome, as you have to go to settings and the wifi, and the log into the special wifi network and then you can access your files. I would like it to be more seamless, like when you open Appls'e earpods and voila you are connected.

Art Filter
I know those who are more serious in their photography looked down on the Art filters on Olympus bodies. I for one reserved judgement. Honestly, I used them a lot. Here is one.

Cuddling time. EP5 with the Olympus 45mm.

Granted, I can or somebody else can get this effect using the various softwares available, but this provide a shorter way of getting what I want or what I expect. The thing is how you look at it. If you think of it as a nuisance (it does cause the viewfinder to flicker), then it becomes a nuisance. But if you look at those Art Filters as an aid, then yeah, they may surprise you. I find the Art Filters provides another dimension in one's photographic learning or journey. The effect differs as to how the source came about. For example, the effects differs when one uses different lenses and whether you got the filter done in camera or on mobile. Yes the accompanying app allows you to add the filter on your phone. Because its something that you learn as you shoot, that makes the shoot itself more magical, more surprising and sometimes, I do not deny it, more frustrating.

End of Part 1. I will continue soonest with regards to using the ep5 with legacy lenses. Here is a peak.

Idris, thirsty. EP5 with minolta 50mm f2 MD.

Ok, I am back from sending my son to school. Here is one more picture of the ep5 used with the Minolta 50mm f2 MD mount.

Sarah. Ep5 with the Minolta 50mm f2.0 MD. Grainy film art filter.

As you can see of the picture of my niece, the Art Filter works quite differently with other non native lenses. The photo below shows the Art Filter being used on Rokkor 35mm 2.8 WG.

Thus, with every different lens that you mate with the EP5, you will get a different effect.

Moving on, its not that ergonomically easy to use classic lenses on the EP5. The lack of a good grip does not help in focussing the lenses. I have not used those heavier lenses on the EP5 and I can imagine that I will be doing so in the  foreseeable future.

Electronically, the focus peaking works and the bright white or whatever color that you selected will be shown clearly to aid in your focussing. However, the screen or even the VF4 viewfinder will lag once you switch on that function. The good news is the EVF (VF4) is good fantastic good that I mosty shoot without the focus peaking on.

In the time which I have been using the EP5, I have yet to hate it. I am learning more about it as I use it and no matter what, it still is one of the most handsome camera I have seen.

I will leave you with this picture taken with the EP5 and the Panasonic Leica 25mm 1.4.

Bread Pudding
Come on back and hopefully I get to review the camera which is even a better steal at SGD$100. The EP2.
